Grand Central Bakery, Portland

Grand Central Bakery of Portland, Oregon, is as much loved for its inviting, comfortable stores as for its artisan breads and pastries. According to President Ben Davis, when Grand Central Bakery opens a new location, the company strives to honor the character of the building and the neighborhood – which means no two bakeries are quite alike. Grand Central Bakery asked Rejuvenation’s trade experts to create lighting schemes for two shops. The fixtures needed to be distinct but also convey the Grand Central Bakery brand as a whole.

For the first shop, Rejuvenation took its cues from the productive, workingman personality of Portland’s North Fremont neighborhood. Several Streamline-style Skyport fixtures hover over a large community table, providing ample illumination for snacking customers. Amidst the bakery’s eclectic mix of industrial furnishings, wood beams, and local art, the sleek, machine-inspired lights are “functional, eye-catching, and retro and modern at the same time,” says company president Ben Davis.

The second bakery location, in Portland’s Beaumont Village, is surrounded by well-kept early-20th-century homes. Based on original fixtures from the same time period, Rejuvenation’s Willis pendants were a smart solution. Multiple lights, customized by length, Brushed Nickel finish, and tomato-red steel shades, hang in a cheerful row over a street-facing bar counter. Seen from outside, they beckon passersby to come in; in the bakery, they provide a bright, individual light source for customers reading, working on laptops, and holding casual meetings. Their spare, industrial sensibility is the perfect complement to the low-key, rustic ambiance of this Grand Central shop.
